How the AI works

What gets sent, what doesn't, and why barcode scans never touch a model.

AI is used for three things: identifying food in photos, interpreting written or spoken descriptions, and analyzing your logs for insights. Barcode scanning uses no AI at all.

What gets sent

Only the specific thing being analyzed — the photo, or the text description, or the summary of logs for an insight. Requests carry an anonymous identifier and nothing that identifies you: no email, no name, no account, because none of those exist.

What doesn't get sent

Your food log database never leaves the device. It's stored locally and stays there. Photos are processed to extract nutrition and are not retained.

Why barcodes are different

A barcode lookup returns manufacturer label data from the Open Food Facts and Edamam databases. There's no estimation involved and no model in the loop, which is why it's free and unlimited while the AI features aren't.

Accuracy

Photo and description estimates are estimates. They're good at identifying what a food is and reasonable at portion size, but a model cannot know how much oil was in the pan. For anything you eat frequently, entering it once from a label or recipe will beat an estimate every time.
