Body metrics and BMI

What BMI can and can't tell you, and why it's off by default.

Food Loops can display BMI alongside your weight chart, but it's off by default. Turn it on under Settings, Body Metrics Display.

What BMI is

Body Mass Index is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Below 18.5 is classified underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese, per WHO cut-points for adults.

What BMI isn't

It isn't a measure of health, body composition or fitness. It uses two numbers and cannot tell muscle from fat, so a muscular person often reads overweight while someone who has lost significant muscle can read healthy while carrying too much fat. It also says nothing about where fat sits, which matters more for health risk than the total.

It's off by default for a reason: for a fair number of people the number does more harm than good. It's there if it's useful to you and invisible if it isn't.
